Flag Size (H x L): 3.75" x 6"
Description....:
7 star American parade flag, printed on coarse, glazed cotton, made to commemorate the first wave of Confederate States that seceded from the Union on February 4th, 1861. Texas was the 7th of these states, which also included, in order, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana. While Northern children waved 13 star flags and flags with the full star count, some of their Southern counterparts waved 7, 8, & possibly 9 star flags as a subtle means of displaying their Confederate loyalties.

This example is unusual among 7 star parade flags because it dates to the Civil War period (1861-1865), while most 7-star examples are post-war. In addition, the crude printing and the long arms of the stars give it better folk qualities than other varieties and thus greater visual appeal. Adding to the visual appeal is the strong, chromatic orange color of the stripes.

The flag is also unusual because of its large size among 7 star parade flags. Although it may seem very small to the casual observer, the most common size of 7 star parade flag is actually less than three inches in length.

Because most examples that can be found in the marketplace were made after the war instead of during it, like this example; and due to the large size and graphic qualities, this is a great flag for an advanced parade flag collector.

Mounting: The gilded molding dates to the period between 1850 and 1880. The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton, black in color, that has been washed to reduce excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is u.v. protective.

Condition: There is minor foxing and staining, accompanied by minor losses. Many of my clients prefer early flags to show their age and history of use.
