LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA BUCKET BENCH IN YELLOW MUSTARD PAINT WITH SALMON POLKA DOT DECORATION, 1830-50
Dimensions (inches): 29" w x 61" h x 14" d
Description:
Plank-sided bucket bench, on half-moon, bootjack feet, in mustard paint with salmon polka-dot decoration. With 6 deep shelves, this variant on the standard 2 or 3 shelf design is distinctly unusual and was perhaps made for canning jars or some other utilitarian function. It accommodates folded quilts, bedcovers and horse blankets especially well for display. Made ca 1830-50, with cut-nailed construction, it is one of the very few paint-decorated shelves that I have ever encountered.

I first owned this about 15 years ago. It came out of a sale in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where it was bought from a local dealer. I acquired it and sold it to another dealer, who sold it to a client. Somehow it came round-Robin and was re-acquired by the first dealer that purchased it at the sale initially, and I bought it once again.

Condition: The salmon polka-dots were lightly restored.
