Description:
FANCIFUL NECK SASH, CA 1865-1880, PROBABLY WORN BY A MEMBER OF THE PATRIOTIC ORDER SONS OF AMERICA FRATERNAL ORGANIZATION:

Fanciful neck sash, ca 1865-1880, probably worn by a member of the Patriotic Order Sons of America fraternal organization (P.O.S. of A.), who worse such sashes as part of their regalia. The P.O.S. of A. was founded by a Philadelphia physician and is one of America's eldest patriotic and fraternal societies that is still in existence. It once had several hundred Camps (lodges) with several thousand members in the United States of America and its territories, but is now only found in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New Jersey and Louisiana. When the American Civil War (1861-1865) broke out, the first Pennsylvania volunteer regiments were members of the P.O.S. of A. So many members volunteered that only one Camp in Pennsylvania remained active. Some Camps actually enrolled into the Union Army as a whole.

A beautifully visual and fun object, the sash is made of treadle-sewn velvet with metallic, bullion fringe and bullion stars.

Mounting: A great deal of work and expense went into the presentation of the sash, which was hand-sewn to 100% cotton rag mat. A shadow box was created, both to keep the object away from the glass and for visual effect. This was done using one of my best black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed, Italian moldings. Double the length of material was required, in addition to some slick carpentry work, as the sides of the shadow box were made from the same material as the front. The glass front is u.v. protective.

Condition: There is minor staining throughout, accompanied by minor bleeding, and there are minor losses, but there are no serious condition issues.
