MECHANICAL TOY HORSE AND SULKY, HAND-CARVED, AMERICAN, 1870-90
Dimensions (inches):
Description:
MECHANICAL TOY HORSE AND SULKY, HAND-CARVED, AMERICAN, 1870-90:

This fabulous little hand-carved, mechanical, toy horse and sulky depicts a bespeckled Appalossa with a whimsical driver. It's American, dates to the period between 1870 and the 1890's, and its painted surface is nothing short of excellent. But hands-down the best thing about it is the mechanical action. When the wheels are run across a surface with the right amount of pressure, all four legs of the horse are propelled in a well executed trotting motion. It even makes the right kind of sound for a trotting horse. No one yet who has seen it run has been disappointed, simply because it's so clever and interesting. An exceptional American folk art object in all respects, in remarkable condition for the period.

Condition: One eye is absent on the horse. One wire loop is missing from the driver's hand, along with a tiny portion of the hand. There may have been a bell on the harness.
