LARGE HOOKED RUG WITH A SEATED CAT AS THE HOME SQUARE OF A DESIGN STYLED AFTER A PARCHEESI GAME BOARD, WITH STAR-LIKE, 6-PETAL FLOWERS IN EACH CORNER; WOOL & COTTON ON BURLAP, PROBABLY PENNSYLVANIA, MENNONITE, circa 1880-1910
Dimensions (inches): 35.5" square
Description:
Early, hooked, American rug, executed on burlap and of a generous scale, found in Pennsylvania. Made circa 1880-1910, the scrap fabrics, industriously employed, include salmon, red, black, navy, and grey woolen fabrics, brown & pink, knit wool suiting, and black, jersey stocking fabric with a deep grain, probably made of merino wool, laid over a structure of white cotton or linen thread. Also included are several cottons, including pink and brown or black polka-dot, pink and blue plaids, and a blue chambray (denim-like fabric). Probably of Mennonite origin, the graphics of the rug are very unusual, patterned after a parcheesi game board, with a beige, seated cat on the home square and star-like flowers in each corner, with six elongated petals. Both the cat and color of the background are suggestive of warmth, with the red probably selected to represent ‘fire-in-the-hearth,’ a feature typical of Pennsylvania, Mennonite, log cabin quilts, the stacked, lineal designs of which bear keen similarity.

Mounting: The rug was professionally stitch-mounted on 100% cotton twill, black in color, that has been washed and treated for colorfastness. A custom, wooden framework was created for support, and the background fabric was wrapped around it, so that there is an overall depth of approximately 1.5” - 1.75” with the rug. This is deeper than usual and results in a more pronounced presentation.

Condition: The overall condition is excellent and the rug presents beautifully. Fraying, wear, and fading of the fabrics were likely present when the rug was constructed.
