Description:
PORTRAIT OF WASHINGTON, SEATED IN A CHAIR WITH A PATRIOTIC CREST, ca 1830-1860:

Executed in oil on canvas between 1830 and 1860, this wonderful portrait of George Washington depicts our beloved general and president seated in a most unusual chair, with an oval, patriotic device on the crest that has a rare pattern of 13 stars (a circular design with a triangle of 3 stars in the center). It also includes two other interesting elements, which are the presentation sword in his lap and the feathered quill near his hand.

The front of the painting might have undergone a light cleaning, because the colors are strong, but the overall appearance is that of original, untouched condition. The back of the canvas is practically black with oxidation and the front has nice craquelure.

Though unsigned, the work is of excellent quality, strong in detail and shading. When these facts are combined with the patriotic crest, sword, and quill, the outstanding state of early condition, and early date in which it was painted, the result is a rendering of Washington that is well above the average examples that reach the marketplace.

Framing: I married the painting to this ca 1860-1870, four-part frame. The outer portion is solid walnut with black-painted trim. The next section is ebonized gesso with a masculine, neoclassical design, and the two inner liners are gilded. While I would typically not recommend using a second-half, 19th century, walnut frame for such a painting, but this example is of unusually strong quality with a very bold appearance and colors that compliment and strengthen those on the canvas. I tried various gilded, 19th century portrait frames, but none worked as well as my ultimate choice.
