BOLDLY PAINTED DOLL HOUSE DOORS, CA 1870:
Colorfully painted doll house doors, constructed of two poplar panels. The image is that of a large, brick, two-chimney colonial, probably built at the time of the date indicated above the upstairs door frame (1765). The doors, porch, and sunroom at the far right are obviously late 19th century alterations to the original design. The doors were made circa 1870-1890.
The painting is generally masculine in nature. It was probably done by a father for his daughter, depicting the family home. The presence of a building right next door certainly suggests an urban location. This endearing, high-impact item has hung in my own collection for a number of years. A wonderful example of 19th century American folk art.
Provenance: Ex-Kelter Malce.
Condition: The doors were removed from the house itself and are temporarily attached together (hinged at the center) so they can be used as a fireboard or hung on the wall. |
