UNUSUAL, PAINT-DECORATED, WOODEN STAMP BOX WITH STENCILED EAGLE, CIRCA 1880
Dimensions (inches): 1" t x 4.5"w x 1.25" d
Description:
This wonderful, little, wooden box, made circa 1880, was made for holding stamps. The interior is divided into three, slanted sections, from which stamps could be easily drawn out with the tip of a finger. The construction is such that the hinges of the lid, probably wood or wire, are hidden. Painted black, the top is decorated with a gold, spread winged eagle, beneath which, gripped in its talons, is a billowing streamer, with tiny painted words that read: “U.S. Stamps.” The lid sinks into the front and sizes, to remain tight. The bird is flanked on either side by five gold stars. The bottom is signed with the initials “C.R..”

Condition: Very minor edge wear.
