Nautical compass wheel, made of wood and hand-painted throughout, with the points of the dial rendered in black on a yellow ground and the directional letters painted in yellow. Folk style renderings of flora surround the triangle representing north, on which other designs are also present. Among these is a cross, set within a standing ellipse. The colors and surface are very nice and a simple wooden mount was made so that the wheel can easily be displayed on a wall, through use of a black-painted dowel that extends through the center.
My research into wooden dials on early mariner's compasses yielded no results. Those I found were consistently paper or brass. I conservatively estimate the date of manufacture as late 18th or 1st half 19th century, though it could actually be earlier. Whatever the case may be, it's colorful and graphic form would lend great complement to any display of early maritime objects and it would likewise be a very nice addition to a collection of paint-decorated game boards.
Condition: Original, untouched surface with expected wear from age and use. |
