"THE DEFENDERS OF THE UNION": LATE CIVIL WAR BROADSIDE WITH PORTRAITS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN, ANDREW JOHNSON, GEORGE WASHINGTON, SIX CIVIL WAR GENERALS & ADMIRALS

Available: Sold
Frame Size (H x L): Approx. 35" x 28.5"
Flag Size (H x L): 24.25" x 19"
Description....:
A bold and extraordinary printed broadside, made to memorialize and commemorate a selection of those men who led the fight to end slavery and keep the Union together. Probably made after the death of Lincoln, which would explain the unusual amount of black in this monochrome engraving, as well as the portrait of Andrew Johnson of a size equivalent to Lincoln. Definitely made near the end of the war. Note the obvious absence of McClellan. The inclusion of George Washington draws a parallel between the current struggle for freedom and that which took place during the American Revolution.

A printer's mark in the lower right corner reads: "Published by Chr. [Charles] Kimmel & Forster, 254 & 256 Canal St., N.Y.".

Mounting: This is a sandwich mount between U.V. protective acrylic and 100% cotton twill, black in color. The black fabric has been washed to reduce excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. A layer of mylar was also placed between the parchment and the background as a barrier. The mount was placed in a black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed Italian molding.

Condition: Minor age toning and foxing and minor edge wear.
