Description....:
Pair of matching Stevensgraph ribbons, made during the WWII era, with highly detailed portraits of Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, followed by representations of their signatures, above images of the Stars & Stripes and the Union Jack, respectively.

The technology to weave these highly detailed silk textiles was developed during the mid-19th century by Thomas Stevens, a weaver in Coventry, England, who adapted a Jacquard loom to weave colorful pictures from silk. By 1862 he was producing four different designs and by the late 1880's he had approximately 900. Many were bookmarks, but there were greeting cards, postcards, and other formats.

In America production began soon afterwards in Paterson, New Jersey, with manufacturers then expanding elsewhere with satellite locations. Most were signed, but these particular examples are of unknown origin. They may be British or American. Whatever the case may be they are not common and this is the first pair that I have encountered.

Mounting: The textiles havebeen hand-stitched to 100% cotton, black in color, which was washed to reduce excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. The mounts were then placed in a modern molding that has a finish like early gunmetal. Spacers keep the textiles away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.
