Description....:
Stevensgraph (woven silk picture) in the form of a bookmark, made to celebrate our nation’s 100-year anniversary of independence in 1876. The form is straight with a triangular wedge at the bottom. The imagery features an oval medallion with a beautifully executed image of George Washington, bordered at the bottom by shapes that mimic the profile of the textile itself, each of which contains the name of one of the original 13 colonies. Note that Philadelphia, which played host to the Centennial International Exposition, appears at the center. This 6-month long, World’s Fair event served as the nucleus of centennial celebrations in America.

At the top is an Eagle carrying the Stars & Stripes. Below the eagle, along the top arch of the center medallion, is a scrolling banner with text that reads: "The United Colonies Are, and Ought to Be, Free and Independent States". Below Washington are the dates 1776 - 1876 and 38 gold stars interspersed to represent the 38 states that formed the Union after August 1st of 1876. And at the bottom, fit into the wedge, is a patriotic shield with laurel and oak leaves to the right and left, respectively, above which is a narrow streamer with the "E Pluribus Unum" slogan.

Mounting: The gilded molding dates to the period between 1820 and 1860. The textile has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton, black in color, that was washed to reduce excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is U.V. protective.

Condition: There is a tiny nick on the left edge near the bottom of the wedge, but there are no serious condition issues of any kind.
