PAINT-DECORATED, BOOK-BOX STYLE, FOLDING BACKGAMMON BOARD IN RED, WHITE, AND BLACK, ca 1885:
Folding, book-box style backgammon board retaining its original paint-decorated surface. The interior consists of red and black points, finely trimmed with sunfire yellow pinstripes on a white ground. The exterior is black with a black and white checkerboard, trimmed with gold pinstriping. Dating to the period between 1870 and 1890, the box is constructed of wood with brass hinges and was likely produced by an individual who made these as part of his profession, possibly in a cottage industry setting.
Condition: There are minor dents, scratches, and losses, indicative of use and age. The exterior has more significant loss. The interior retains a great early surface with almost all of its original paint and excellent patina. |
