PENNSYLVANIA, PAINT-DECORATED AND GILDED SETTEE WITH TWO DISTLEFINK BIRDS AND 6 HERONS, 1845-1865
Dimensions (inches): 72" wide x 34.5" tall x 22" deep
Description:
PENNSYLVANIA, PAINT-DECORATED AND GILDED SETTEE WITH TWO DISTLEFINK BIRDS AND 6 HERONS, 1845-1865:

Paint-decorated, Pennsylvania, plank-seat settee of the mid 19th century (1845-65) in the half-spindle-back style with an angel wing crest rail. The deep, chocolate brown background is trimmed out in lime green and chrome yellow, but the really marvelous element is contained in the theorm-like registers on the crest rails and horizontal back slats. These are gilded and painted in gold, green, rose red, blue, and white and include not only fruit, as-is expected on many settees of this ilk, but two distlefink birds and six smaller herons. The distlefinks are perched among bell flowers, cherries, and greenery in the center of the two outer panels on the crest rails. The herons play an interesting role, flanking the interior of each arch of the angel wing scallops, which are filled with pears, plums, and pineapples. An urn of fruit decorates the center panel and all of the elements are surrounded by gilded scrollwork. The theme is continued on the lower slats, where there are more bell flowers. The overall result is a very colorful and well-executed example of Pennsylvania German folk art on a piece of rural-made, paint- decorated furniture.

Condition: Some wear, but far less than expected. Repaired breaks where the arms meet the back slats. This condition exists on almost all of the settees of this type that I have owned. The arms, like the rest of the settee, are very stable. This is a sit-able, useable, sturdy piece of antique furniture.
